Farms and irrigation
Meters sit at the far end of the property and still get read by hand, then typed into a spreadsheet. A cellular meter sends the reading every day on its own.
Holiday homes and baches
A burst pipe or a running toilet can go unnoticed for weeks when nobody is there. Daily readings help you spot unexpected water use while the property is empty, and the meter alerts you to a possible leak or burst pipe.
Industrial and commercial sites
Sub-meters spread across a large site, or a handful of meters where a gateway is not worth installing. Each meter connects on its own.
Small and remote sites
For sites with just a few meters, cellular can avoid the cost of a separate gateway.
How it works
✅ Install. The meter fits in line like any standard water meter. Your plumber can install it, or we can arrange installation.
✅ Connect. Every day the meter sends its reading over the 4G mobile network. There is no gateway or base station to install or power.
✅ Monitor. Readings arrive in your Smart Metering online portal, where you can see daily usage and history for every meter. The meter also alerts you to a possible water leak or burst pipe.

Coverage
Available across New Zealand where compatible cellular coverage is available at the meter location. Pits, concrete and metal cabinets can affect signal. We will assess your proposed location before confirming suitability and advise if site testing is needed.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a gateway or base station?
No. Each meter connects directly to the mobile network.
Who installs the meter?
Your own plumber can install it. If you prefer, we can arrange installation and quote it with your meters.
Are there ongoing fees?
There are no monthly connectivity or platform fees for 10 years. Both are included in the price per meter. Optional billing services are quoted separately.
How often are readings sent?
Once a day.
Can you bill tenants or occupants for their water?
Yes. Smart Metering also runs metering and billing for apartments, townhouses and commercial buildings. Ask us for a quote.
Can readings be sent to my council?
If you need daily readings for water take reporting, talk to us about your consent requirements and we will tell you what fits. See Agriculture and Industrial Metering.
Is it suitable for hot water?
This meter is for cold water. For hot water metering, contact us.
